From November 14 to December 10, the International Technical Committee (CTI) of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) visited Chengdu, completing its first technical inspection of first technical inspection of the on-going preparation work for the World University Games Chengdu. During the 27 days, 18 technical committee chairs came in succession, conducting the inspection of 44 stadiums and participating in 74 meetings to give their comments on the preparation work.
So, what did they find out?
FISU Representatives Held Several Meetings Regard Different Issues of Preparation Work in Chengdu
During the 27 days of inspection, 74 meetings were held in total. The meetings regard issues such as: the introduction of the Preparatory Committee of Chengdu; the operation of the stadiums of each individual sports; the information technology support for individual games and all games in general; allocating human resources and making summaries and so on. FISU representatives paid visits to 44 stadiums in total, of which 28 are for competition and training and 16 are for training and warm-up. These stadiums are located in 15 municipal districts and counties in Chengdu and Mianzhu City, Deyang. The Mianzhu Sports Center, for example, is the stadium built for basketball games.
Stadiums of the World University Games Chengdu Are Under Scheduled Construction or Reconstruction
Right now, there are 12 new stadiums under construction process, and there are 37 old stadiums to be reconstructed on the schedule.
Dong'an Lake Sports Park, as the site for the opening and closing ceremony of World University Games Chengdu, is surely the most eye-catching project. Its planned layout of "three gymnasiums and one stadium" has taken shape, and the 40,000-seat international stadium has had its main structure completed and its roof built. The multifunctional gymnasium is an 18,000-seat extra-large international gymnasium, and its main structure was completed in July 2019. It is currently undergoing sliding construction of steel structures and the construction of mechanical-electric facilities and fire protection facilities. It is estimated that the whole construction process will be completed by February 2020. The technicl committee chair of gymnastic Holger Albrecht sincerely complimented the progress, saying: "These stadiums are stunning already despite not finishing yet. I firmly believe that the Chengdu World University Games will be a great success!"
The AV Manager of Napoli World University Games Athlete's Village, Paola Melloni, and her team inspected the Athletes' Village project of Chengdu University. Following the completion of the main structure building of the No. 1 and No. 2 Athletes' Apartment Buildings, the main structure of the medical center and training building will be completed soon. Paola Melloni commented that the construction of the World University Games Athlete's Village is a significant part of the prepartion work. "The Chengdu World University Games Athlete's Village is constructed through reforming the Chengdu University. This place has beautiful surroundings and adequate facilities, and has the environment that university students are familiar with. It is especially perfect for carrying out the concept of 'sharing' of the Games: sharing friendship among university students and young people from all over the world. Besides, all the buildings here are built in the same style, making it a whole in view. We should say 'Congratulations!' on doing such a great job!"
FISU officials also conducted on-site inspections in several stadiums including Xindu Xiangcheng Sports Center, China Modern Pentathlon Events Center, and Gaoxin Sports Center. The total construction area of the Xindu Xiangcheng Sports Center in the north of the city has reached 86,000㎡, including the gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, national fitness center, and people’s fitness service center. So far, the main structure of the gymnasium has been completed and it is being furnished and decorated right now. The sports center will mainly undertake the tasks of hosting water polo games and basketball training during the World University Games. The Pierre de Coubertin Modern Pentathlon Center in Shuangliu District is a long-established stadium with an area of 341 acres. It is currently the largest and best-equipped modern pentathlon center in China and one of the top-rank, best-equipped in the world. Gaoxin Sport Center in Chengdu, which is still under construction, is composed of six parts: a multifunctional gymnasium, a fitness service center for citizens, a softball field, a ball hall, a stadium, and an outdoor fitness ground. It is a "one-stop" sports center integrating the functions of sports, leisure, holding events and doing promotion and so on.
As one of the basketball venues for the Chengdu World University Games, the Sichuan Gymnasium is now under reconstruction. The basketball technical committee chair Ulf Ohrman praised the gymnasium, easpecially the reasonable layout of it. He thought that there is a lot of space for renovation in the future.
The archery technical committee chair Juan Carlos Holgado said he was very impressed with the preparation work for the Chengdu World University Games. As he put it, "The preparation work is well-planned and clearly divided to different organizations."
In the eyes of the professionals, the Chengdu World University Games construction project should achieve the twin goals of "attracting sports events to the city" and "helping the sports industry in Chengdu prosper". Doing their best to run the events well and planning for a long-term future will help achieve value and function for the city after these sports events have finished. Besides, expanding the economic opportunities brought by the sports games creatively will definitely accelerate the sports industry in Chengdu to achieve high-quality development.
