A meeting between the visiting committee members and the Organizing Committee
It was established that from November 20 to December 10, FISU will send the project leaders of 18 individual sports competitions to Chengdu to check the preparations for each respective competition. Several meetings covering organizing committee introductions, technical work, information technology and communication, human resources, summaries, evaluations and comments will be held for each competition. In addition, site investigation and confirmation work will also be carried out for each competition.
The preparation for the Chengdu Universiade is divided into five stages: initial launch, all-round promotion, sprint, event opening, summary & ending. Now the Chengdu Universiade is at the stage of all-round promotion. Currently the main priorities are to hold the first meeting of the Chengdu Universiade Organizing Committee, and then fully promote the following: the construction of Chengdu Dong’an Lake Sports Park and Universiade Village, the renovation and upgrading of the venues to be used for competition and training during the Chengdu Universiade; the technical inspections of the competition and training venues, which will be followed by reporting the results to FISU for review; the building of special work groups for each competition and the teams in charge of venue operation; the environmental renovation and improvement of Chengdu; the optimization and improvement of the traffic line “venues - Universiade Village - hotels - transportation hubs”; the training of volunteers and those who will be receiving foreign guests; the public awareness of the Chengdu Universiade and related marketing around the city; and market development and so on.
Zhong Haiyan, Director of the Competition Organization Division of Chengdu Universiade Organizing Committee Competition Organization Work Group, told a reporter that the plan is to hold two meetings of this type: once during their visit from November 20 to December 10, when the project leaders for each of the 18 competitions would come to Chengdu in batches to coordinate with their Chinese counterparts, and once again toward the end of the next year. Both sets of meetings are highly important to the preparations for the Chengdu Universiade, he noted.
With regards to the details of the inspections carried out as part of the visit, Zhong Haiyan told the reporter that each project leader had prepared a check list which specified the work that needed to be completed for each competition; for example, setting up competition teams, recruiting referees, planning how many volunteers will be required, ensuring comprehensive guarantees for athletes, and so on.
Juan Carlos Holgado
Juan Carlos Holgado, project leader of the archery competition for the FISU Technical Committee, said that this time he came to Chengdu mainly to gather information about the Universiade 2021, especially about the archery competition. He expressed that he wanted to give the Organizing Committee more advice, and he believed that they could make the Chengdu Universiade a great success.
After listening to the introduction by the Organizing Committee, Holgado told a reporter that during the meeting that morning, he learned that the Chengdu Organizing Committee had done a great deal of work, and that they had a highly specific plan with a clear division of labor. He said he was very satisfied with their work and hoped to see more of their progress soon.
After hearing the Organizing Committee’s report, Shen Chunde, technical chairman of the track and field competition of the FISU Technical Committee, also expressed his confidence that the Chengdu Universiade would be a resounding success. He said that his visit to Chengdu had shown him that Chengdu attached great importance to the Universiade in every relevant aspect, and that it was evident that preparations for the Chengdu Universiade were in full swing. He also said that the track and field competition was an important part of the Universiade. He knew that this time the track and field competition would be held at the Shungliu Sports Center, and he believes that the equipment and venue of the Sports Center will see further upgrades before the Chengdu Universiade is held in 2021.
Shen Chunde said that the priorities for now were getting all the competition venues ready and recruiting enough personnel. He added that, as the Universiade is an international competition, importance should also be give to the language training. He also noted that as most participants of the Universiade were young people, they should show the strong spirit of Chengdu’s youth through the participation of university students.
