Since the launch of the 31st FISU Summer World University Games Key Visual Design Solicitation campaign on April 20, creative designs from all over the world have been pouring in. Among thousands of designs, one T-shirt design with sharply contrasting colors attracts our attention.
In this design entry, four colors — red, green, yellow and blue — are presented with gradual changes in tone. Chengdu tokens —Red Sichuan pepper, green Sichuan pepper, gingko leaves, hibiscus flowers — are smartly placed inside four hidden pockets on the T-shirt. This is a creative way to display authentic "Chengdu flavor"…This set of visual designs with an impressively fashionable visual flair comes from Wen Han, a young contestant of the key visual design collection campaign who was born in the 1990s.
This designer who has novel ideas is from Hainan, a beautiful island in China's South Sea. In 2016, he graduated from the world-renowned Parsons School of Design in New York, ranking among the top ten in his major. Speaking on taking part in the competition, he expressed his excitement after seeing the news of an open call for submissions on Twitter and said that he likes the slogan "Chengdu Makes Dreams Come True" very much. "It's an honor for our country that Chengdu won the bid for holding the World University Games in 2021. I think the spirit of fighting against all the odds delivered by the World University Games can help people get through hard times and have a positive attitude towards life, adversity, and ambition. To be able to contribute to this through my design, I feel honored." he said.
After finishing the key visual design submission, a creative idea started to grow in Wen Han's mind, "Since I am a clothes designer, why can't I convey the key visual design in my heart vividly and materially through clothes design?" He followed through on this idea immediately and five days later, two versions of T-shirt design with the same theme as his key visual design were materialized.
This set of T-shirt design involves multiple elements - blocks, dotted ink, rivets, painting by hand, and so on - with true ingenuity. The fashionable and avant-garde concept has an incredible chemical reaction with the rhythm of the sport, intuitively expressing the spirit of the "Tianfu (an elegant name of Chengdu) "culture - innovation, creation, elegance, fashion, optimism, and inclusiveness.
The four colors of the World University Games are used creatively and blended together, with gradual color changes and sharp contrasts between red, green, yellow, and blue to express the exuberance of youth and a strong sense of vigor which is inherent in sporting competitions. In the design, the four words "Sustainable, Smart, Spirited, and Shared", which illustrate the Games' ideology, are included, explicitly displaying the Game's high international standard, diversity, innovation, and toleration.
Wen Han, who lives abroad for most of the time, is "longing for Chengdu". To express his love for Chengdu, he also added the "spicy flavor" of the Sichuan cuisine into the design. He wanted to make the spicy flavor visible, therefore, he "hid" the ingredients which give Sichuan cuisine its special flavor —such as the red Sichuan pepper and green Sichuan pepper — in four customized pockets with rivets fixing them on the T-shirt. "This is my salute to 'Tianfu' culture. This design expresses a sense of keeping up fighting, thus I hope it can inspire everyone to remember their dreams whenever and wherever they are and work hard for them. I hope that the fighting spirit of Chengdu can not only be seen by the whole world, but also be 'smelled' through the T-shirt!"
