A special creative proposal

On May 1, the Preparatory Committee of the 31st Summer World University Games Chengdu 2021 received a special creative proposal for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games. This proposal came from an 18-year-old girl named Nastya from Moscow State University.

Nastya proposed many creative ideas on the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games, for example, the mixed performance of "Russian ballet dancing and pandas dancing", which can show the deep friendship between the two countries on "The Belt and Road" route. Besides, she also suggested performing Sichuan Opera with the help of intelligent technologies. In this way, we can do a "time-travel" and recreate the scenes from the famous Chinese literary work --"The Romance of Three Kingdoms" vividly. This creative proposal, which combines east and west, as well as past and present, is the first one that the Committee received from a foreign university student.

As of May 10, the Committee has received about 50 creative proposals from 12 universities from abroad, including the University of Technology Sydney, Macquarie University, Waseda University, Boston University, Moscow State University and Chiang Mai Rajabhat University and so on. Right now, a "World University Games fever" is spreading worldwide. The initiators of this fever, we find, are 4 students who are studying abroad and are "longing for Chengdu" very much.

Four students are "longing for Chengdu" and spread this activity voluntarily on international social media

At the beginning of April this year, Chengdu launched a campaign for collecting creative ideas for the opening and closing ceremonies of the World University Games Chengdu 2021. Students who study in universities worldwide are enthusiastic about the campaign and spread it voluntarily in their universities.

Duan Yuzhu, an international student of Moscow State University from China, with her friends Lin Fengnan, Wu Yifei, and Wang Shun, who are from China too and study in Russia, planned to create a trendy topic about the upcoming World University Games on social media to show their support. Then they came up with a perfect theme -- giant panda, the iconic figure of Chengdu.

On April 10, these four girls started an activity on VK, the biggest Russian social media platform, with the name of "cutest pandas" challenge. This activity received great popularity as Russian netizens enthusiastically posting their creations of pandas on VK, including drawing, handmade crafts, video clipping, and so on. Within only seven days, students in Moscow State University have uploaded more than 2,000 videos under the tag "cutest pandas"chanllenge to express their love for pandas as well as Chengdu.

The "cutest pandas" challenge has drawn the attention of Russian media. The Voice of Russia, Russia Victory, and other media reported this activity, adding heat for this featured activity in whole Russia.

Love letters to Chengdu from eight countries

Besides Russia, the upcoming World University Games Chengdu 2021 starts to raise attention in other countries too.

Yao Xinran, an international student of Waseda University who came from Chengdu, noticed the collection campaign on social media. To support it, she initiated an activity named "Writing a Love Poem for Chengdu" on Instagram and Facebook. Yao said: "In starting this activity, I am trying to get young people from all over the world to feel Chengdu's charm -- such as the stunning scenery and tasty food that are unique to Chengdu."

This activity attracted netizens from the US, Australia, Japan, France, and so on. People are writing poems online to express their love for Chengdu.

A netizen from Australia named Qihong wrote a poem that literally means "Slowly replacing the lid of my covered-bowl tea at Wide Valley, I see a reflection of life outside the city, like the bamboo forest rolls ever closer." A student called Reki He from the University of Technology Sydney wrote (literally) "Chengdu bears a unique feature that integrates folk living and modern fashion; its inclusivity makes it easy to fall in love with." An international student in South Korea named Zhou Xiaoyao wrote (literally): "A weathered leaf will be replaced by a new sprout; a fallen blossom will be rewarded with a branch full of fruit, yet my love for Chengdu will neither be diminished nor replaced."In these words, the romantic affection towards Chengdu of these young people is fully displayed.

More than forty thousand people liked the two activities

These activities (the "cutest pandas" challenge and "Writing a Love Poem for Chengdu") were widely spread on social media around the world and attracted more than ten thousand participants and received more than forty thousand likes. Creative proposals for the opening and closing ceremonies of the World University Games Chengdu 2021 flooded into Chengdu from around the world: Zhenya (literal translation) from Peoples' Friendship University of Russia suggested that a virtual hologram panda attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the World University Games Chengdu 2021; Anna (literal translation) from Moscow State University proposed that a panda character could sing the song "Chengdu" (a popular Chinese pop song from singer Zhao Lei); Warisara, a young adult from Thailand, wished that a Thai singer could sing with Chris Lee through a video during the opening and closing ceremonies.
