At 10:28 a.m. on June 18, as the "lifting" order was issued and the tower crane slowly lifted the last 8-meter-long steel beam into the predetermined position, the main structure of the project, the Media Center of the World University Games, Chengdu 2021, was announced as being completed.
This project is the last supporting venue to start construction in preparation for the Games. After the main structrue construction being finished, the curtain wall installation and interier decoration will begin. The project's artistic architectural direction and design will be grandually revealed.
The Media Center of the World University Games Chengdu 2021 is located in the Dong'an Lake area of Chengdu, with a total area of 45,000 square meters (including a basement of 15,000 square meters). It has one underground floor and five floors above ground. Additonally, the building's height is 24 meters. A steel structure form has been adopted for the structure on the ground and comprises some 7,000 tons of steel. The architectural design of the project takes traditional Chinese academy culture as a starting point and inspiration. The curtain walls are the exterior façade, and give off a simple, book-like feel, while the overall structure takes the form of an enclosing layout like an ancient Chinese academy, leveraging the firm flexibility of its steel structure. Together these designs express the concept of "Dong'an Academy".
After the World University Games Chengdu 2021, this architecture will be transformed into a library and hall of archives, where the original structural characteristics in the overall reconstruction will be retained and the architectural special features will be put to good use. The trinity of the building with its raised lower portions hanging in the air, the "city balcony", and city park look harmonious when viewed as a whole, demonstrating the concept of the "park city" and displaying a strong sense of cultural confidence.
