The Preparatory Committee of the Summer World University Games, Chengdu 2021 has announced that the meeting of Heads of Delegations will be held from 19-23 April 2021, in Chengdu. This meeting will serve as a rehearsal to cover some key topics and functional areas before the official opening of the Games.
The 2021 summer edition of the World University Games will be the first international multi-sport event to be held in western China. The decision to confirm Chengdu city as the host of the 31st Summer World University Games was made at the FISU Executive Committee meeting held in Russia in March 2019.
Chengdu will be the third city in the Chinese mainland to host an edition of the WUG, following the 2001 edition in Beijing and the 2011 WUG in Shenzhen.
The Chengdu 2021 World University Games will be staged from 18-29 August with a sport programme that includes 18 sports and 269 events: athletics, diving, archery, basketball, volleyball, swimming, water polo, badminton, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, fencing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis and three optional sports namely Wushu, rowing and shooting.
Multiple key topics will be covered in the 5-day meeting, including tests for key functional areas like accreditation, accommodation, and press operations, among many others.
The agenda includes several venue tours to confirm the state of preparedness as well as the all-important draw for team sports. The Dong'an Lake Sports Park has been chosen as the main venue for the opening ceremony and there are 49 sports venues in total.
The home town of giant pandas, Chengdu is the capital of the Sichuan Province and is one of the largest central cities in western China. With more than 4500 years of civilization, the city was among the first to be crowned a "Famous Historical and Cultural City" in China. It is also an important education center in China with 64 universities and close to 1 million full-time students, thus making it an ideal setting for the World University Games.
