Bangkok, the capital and largest city of Thailand, as well as the second largest city in Southeast Asia (behind Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia), is located in the Chao Phraya River Delta. In addition to being the political and economic center of Thailand, its culture, technology and education are also leading in the country. 

 

 

Bangkok is an all-embracing international metropolis that integrates Eastern and Western cultures. Known as the "City of Angels" of the East, Bangkok has the well-developed tourism industry and was once selected as the most popular tourism city in the world. Bangkok is one of the international event centers. As many as 200 to 300 international conferences are held here every year. The city houses the headquarters of the U.N. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, the World Bank, the World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization and the regional offices of more than 20 international agencies.

 

 

With more than 400 Buddhist temples of different sizes, Bangkok is the city boasts the largest number of Buddhist temples in the world. The headquarters of the "World Fellowship of Buddhists" is also located here. Therefore, it has been known as the "Capital of Buddhism". The city's Buddhist temples are exquisite and beautiful, among which the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Keo), the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho) and the Temple of the Golden Buddha (Wat Phra Thong) are the most famous, known as Thailand's three national treasures. Strolling through the city, you will see the towering pagodas, the red-topped temples, and the temples and monasteries with red, green, and yellow fish-ridge roofs, which are infused with unique oriental charm. 

 

 

Bangkok is also a sports-loving city and has hosted four editions of Asian Games. The 24th Summer Universiade in 2007 was also held in Bangkok, which was the first time that Thailand had hosted a worldwide multi-sport event.

 

The Bangkok Summer Universiade kicked off on August 8, 2007, which happened to be another big day - one year to the day before the Beijing Olympics.

 

The Thai people made the opening ceremony the platform to convey the internationalism of sports to the world, which helped to promote the solidarity and friendship among college students, athletes and spectators worldwide. At the opening ceremony, Thailand also presented the slogan "A Country of Smiles", and the smiles of hospitable Thai people became the deepest impression that the Bangkok Summer Universiade left on the guests.

 

 

Ending on August 18, the Bangkok Summer Universiade attracted a total of 6,093 athletes from 151 countries and regions to participate, breaking 31 Universiade records. The overall budget for hosting the Bangkok Summer Universiade was only 2.05 billion Thai Baht, and its economical and pragmatic concept of running the Universiade was unanimously praised.

 

 

The Chinese delegation won 33 gold, 30 silver and 27 bronze medals, topping the gold medal list. Russia (with 29 gold, 26 silver and 38 bronze ones) and Ukraine (with 27 gold, 22 silver and 17 bronze ones) ranked second and third respectively. The Thailand team ranked sixth with 15 gold medals.
