With three months to go before the start of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games, FISU proceeded to the team draw at their headquarters in Lausanne.
The draw involved three sports (men and women): Basketball, Volleyball and Water Polo.
Eric SAINTROND, FISU Secretary General and CEO led the event, under the supervision of Ulf OHRMAN and Nikolaos VASILEIOU, representing the FISU Technical Committee as Chairs for Basketball and Water Polo, respectively.

Basketball teams were allocated to four pools, Volleyball and Water Polo (men) teams divided in two pools and all Water Polo (women) teams placed in only one.
The teams were divided into tiers based on their FISU ranking, which is established according to results of previous FISU events, and with the IF support.
In addition, no more than three countries/regions from the same continent could be placed in the same pool, with the exception of women's Basketball (no more than two).
Once drawn in their respective pools, teams were seeded inside each pool through an additional draw, to ensure more random initial games.
