The host city of the 81st World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) in 2023 will be announced at the 79th Worldcon in Washington this weekend. Chengdu, China and Winnipeg, Canada are competing for this honour.
The Worldcon is a remarkable global gathering for science fiction and fantasy fans with a long history. The Chengdu delegation to the Convention held international cultural events to celebrate the 200-day countdown to the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games.
The delegation set up a special booth to display the mascot Rongbao of the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games and the images of Chengdu, and to play the promotional video of the Games on a loop, promoting the city to the whole world. In only half a day, the booth attracted 1,500 visitors who also took photos with the cute Rongbao, and showed their love for it.
Canada’s science fiction writers Robert J. Sawyer and Derek Künsken also visited the booth. They expressed their support and wishes for Chengdu's bid and the upcoming Chengdu 2021 FISU Games.
The interaction of the Worldcon and the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games in Washington not only helps Chengdu to bid for the 2023 Worldcon, but also enables various elements of the Games including Rongbao to be showcased in an all-round way, so as to enhance the international popularity and influence of the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games.
